No, your eyes do not deceive you. This sinkhole really is on fire. In fact, it was intentionally set ablaze. The Darvaza gas crater is a collapsed underground cavern near Derweze, Turkmenistan. The crater collapsed because a natural gas field lies below it, and after the collapse, methane gas began to leak out. Geologists intentionally set it on fire to prevent the spread of the gas into the atmosphere. It’s thought that the hole has been continuously burning since 1971, and as a result is called the “Door to Hell,” or “Gates of Hell.”

Well, you certainly can’t play around in the “Door to Hell” sinkhole, but what about one where you can do yoga?
