3. Edinburgh Castle

The castle is well-known icon of Edinburgh, which dates from the 11th century. Its role in history varied, and in addition to military purposes it was used as a royal residence, primarily by King Malcolm Canmorom and Queen Margaret, who ruled in the 11th century.

It is assumed that it was the Queen Margaret who build the chapel of St. Margaret, one of the oldest and most famous landmarks in Scotland at a time. Others speculate that the chapel was built by one of her sons in memory of their mother and queen. This castle like others elsewhere in Europe was accompanied by dramatic history. Before you reach the entrance to the castle, you pass witch springs where about300 women were accused of being witches and burned.
