Lake Hillier, Australia

From a distance, Lake Hillier looks like a candy pink lagoon. Move closer, and the deep pink becomes more watery and translucent, but still very much pink. Other pink lakes around the world have had definitive answers from scientists to explain the cause of their unusual colouring, yet the reason for Lake Hillier’s candy tones remains a mystery. Theories abound, of course, especially as unusually Lake Hillier maintains its pink shade year-round. The water even retains its pink hue when bottled. Could it be down to high salinity and the resulting salt loving algae and consequential pink bacteria? Maybe. We here at TravelDen believe some serious unicorn magic is at play here.
