2. Menton, Provence, France

Menton is the place that pretty much perfectly describes the ideal spot on the Cote d’Azur. There are two large beaches, sand and gravel, and the Alps seems like they are about to crumble into the sea.

It used to be the meeting place of wealthy British tourists, who left behind the gardens and the elegance of Belle Epoque. Narrow streets lead up the hill around the baroque churches, and at the end of the Promenade is the border with Italy. Because of the mountains, the town is protected from cold weather, so the climate here is ideal. The old town dates back to 13 century, and for majority of its existence it was part of Monaco. It passed to France in 1860. It breathes culture and you should definitely visit it.
